25th Anniversary of Parkcare: Forum

25th Anniversary of Parkcare forum on 17 and 18 October 2014:  Reflect, Explore and Inspire: celebrating 25 years of ParkCare and Landcare in the ACT.

The first day was a conference format with an informative and interactive mix of guest speakers from academia and other walks of life, and group discussions and feedback.  All survey participants have indicated they would like to have another such forum annually or at least bi-annually.

The second day included a  two hour field trip on Red Hill: hearing about the current and past work of the Red Hill Regenerators from one or two members of the group.  Alison Elvin, native vegetation specialist from Natural Capital and member of the Red Hill Regenerators  led a walk through the reserve focusing on:

  • Why do weeds grow where they grow – reading the landscape through weeds;
  • Do weeds have a role  in the landscape?
  • Methodologies for removing weeds; and
  • Planning your weed control strategy over time.

A handout detailing resources available to assist volunteers in their efforts to control, map and monitor weeds was also provided to participants.

More information should be available on the ACT Government’s Parkcare website when it is available, hopefully in early 2015.
