If you spend time outdoors with Waterwatch or Landcaring/ParkCaring in the ACT, or with the ACT FrogWatch program, chances are you’ll eventually come across a snake. Knowing what to do – and just as importantly, what not to do – can make all the difference.
Join us for this free practical and engaging Snake Awareness Workshop with Canberra’s leading snake expert, Professor Gavin Smith.
Designed specifically for volunteers working in natural environments, this workshop will help you build the knowledge and confidence to work safely in the field while developing a better understanding of these often misunderstood animals.
Please note: This workshop includes a live snake demonstration by Gavin, giving participants the opportunity to observe these fascinating animals up close in a safe, controlled environment. Participants will not handle or interact with the snakes.
During the workshop you will learn:
- How to identify the common snake species found in the ACT.
- How to safely respond to a snake encounter.
- Snake behaviour and how to reduce the likelihood of conflict.
- Basic snakebite first aid and emergency response.
- The important ecological role snakes play in healthy ecosystems.
Whether you’re monitoring waterways, surveying frogs or landcaring, this workshop will provide practical skills that will help you feel more confident when working outdoors.
This workshop is currently just for volunteers in the ACT FrogWatch program, the ACT Waterwatch program, and Landcare/ParkCare in the ACT.
Two identical sessions are being offered – please register for one session only:
- Session One: 10am – 12.30pm
-or-
- Session Two: 1.30pm – 4pm
Places are limited, so bookings are essential. If you can no longer attend the event, please cancel your ticket to make it available for others.
The aim of this workshop isn’t to make you love snakes (but fantastic if you do!), but rather to help you understand them, stay safe around them, and feel confident continuing the important work you do in the field.
