Red Hill work activity on Sunday 7 December 2025 from 9am to 11.30am
At the mid-November working bee, work commenced on tackling an outbreak of Verbascum, Saffron Thistles and Scotch Thistles occurring in the southern part of the Reserve. Removal of these weeds will contribute to our very successful efforts to improve the quality of the woodland in this part of the Reserve.
The task has become somewhat easier since the last working bee as many more of the Verbascum now have flower spikes, and they can easily be controlled by cutting and dabbing the flower spike. The remaining Verbascum and thistles will need to be controlled by chipping with a mattock. There are also some woody weeds in the area that can be controlled by cutting and dabbing.

Location: Park and assemble on the far south end of Mugga Way, below Tamar Street. Task, tool distribution and safety briefings will be held at 9am sharp. Morning tea at 11am at the work site. Around a 10-minute walk to the commencement of the work area. The working bee to end by no later than11.30am.
Conditions: Sloping rocky land and woodland.
You bring: Water to drink, hat, leather gloves, long sleeved shirt, long pants essential, eye protection, sunscreen, solid enclosed shoes. BYO morning tea.
We bring: Tools – We will bring mattocks, loppers, secateurs and saws. Herbicide dabbers will be available and for refill if yours is empty. We will also bring a basic first aid kit and provide tool use and weeding ID and advice as needed. Bring your own tools, if available.
Note: The byo morning tea is an opportunity to discuss matters of relevance to the Group. Work will finish at 11.30am but may be curtailed in hot or wet weather.

Cancellation: The activity will be cancelled by email (if possible), no later than 8am on the activity day, if rain/wind is forecast which could make planned work potentially hazardous, high temperatures before midday are forecast, total fire bans are announced, air pollution is ‘hazardous’ or other official restrictions in force.
